Michelin Alpin 5 – Outstanding security due to the innovative tehnology

A high level of safety is in focus: When developing the new MICHELIN Alpin 5, the objective was reaching a high level of safety under all winter.

Two core technologies for optimum winter performance

The new resdesignedtread pattern ensures special features:

The 'teeth effect', allows the tyre to 'bite' in the snow and so to better resist aquaplaning
The new premium tire has a directional tread, an arrow-shaped profile, as well as specially designed tread blocks with high negative proportion. This makes the tyre to press in the snow, causing a sort of 'teeth effect'. Thanks to the realignment of the side channels, the water is efficiently derived aside, reducing the risk of aquaplaning significantly.

Claw effect for more traction on snow
The slats act like thousands of tiny claws that snag on the ground and produce traction. This effect is all the more effective when the tire has a high number of slats. MICHELIN Alpin 5 has, compared to its predecessor in size 205/55 R16 over more that 12% tread pattern and 16% more slats. Also the tread's negative proportion is increased by 17%.

Contact surface effect for a better steering precision
The 'StabiliGrip' tehnology ensures a special tread which allows
higher steering precision. The larger the contact area on the ground, the better the grip.

Because the tyre deforms at each wheel rotation, the Michelin engineers have specifically designed the tread pattern so that the sipes in the tread block block themselves. Efect: the tread block remains stable despite its sipes, which ensures a high steering precision.

The new rubber compound also has excellent properties on dry and wet surfaces and on snow:

The high silica content in the rubber compound ensures better grip on dry and wet roads. For the first time in the production of a winter tyre, Michelin utilised the inovative 'Tread Compound Technology' and included functional elastomers (synthetic rubber) in the material compund.

These functional elastomers allow a very homogeneous rubber mixture with a higher silica content and thus provide better grip on wet and snowy roads, without compromising the energy efficiency of the tire.

In addition, the new rubber compound also includes Michelin's fourth generation of 'Helio Compound Technology'. Through the use of sunflower oil, the tyre performance is optimized even at very low temperatures.

EU Tyre Label and Efficiency Classes

The Tire Labeling Ordinance specifies the information requirements on fuel efficiency, wet grip and external rolling noise from tires. In addition, reference is made to the winter properties of the product.

The EU 1222/2009 regulation that has been in force since November 1st, 2012 has been revised and will be replaced by regulation EU 2020/740 from May 1st, 2021; From this point on, new requirements apply. The rating classes for fuel efficiency, wet grip and exterior noise have been changed and the layout of the EU label has been adjusted. The manufacturer's product data sheets stored in the EU database can be downloaded via a QR code integrated into the label. Information on snow grip and ice grip is also newly included for tires that meet these criteria.

The following tires are exempt from the regulation: - tires that are designed exclusively for installation on vehicles that were first registered before October 1, 1990 - retreaded tires (until a corresponding extension of EU VO 2020/740 has taken place) - professional off - Road tires - Racing tires - Tires with additional devices to improve traction, eg studded tires - T-type emergency tires - Tires with a permissible speed below 80 km/h - Tires for rims with a nominal diameter ≤ 254 mm or ≥ 635 mm

The criteria and evaluation classes at a glance

fuel efficiency

The fuel consumption depends on the rolling resistance of the tyres, the vehicle itself, the driving conditions and the driving style of the driver. The measured rolling resistance (rolling resistance coefficient) of the tire is divided into classes A (highest efficiency) to E (lowest efficiency).

If a vehicle is completely equipped with class A tires, a consumption reduction of up to 7.5%* is possible compared to class E tyres. In the case of commercial vehicles, it can even be higher.

Please note:
Fuel consumption depends to a large extent on your own driving style and can be significantly reduced by driving in an environmentally friendly manner. Tire pressure should be checked regularly to improve fuel efficiency.

wet grip

Wet grip is divided into classes A (shortest braking distance) - E (longest braking distance).

If a car is equipped with class A tires, compared to class E tires, a braking distance of up to 18 m can be reduced when braking from 80 km/h (on a road surface with average grip).*

Please note:
Traffic safety depends to a large extent on your own driving style. The stopping distances must always be observed. Tire pressure should be checked regularly to improve wet grip.

External rolling noise

The noise emitted by a tire affects the overall volume of the vehicle and affects not only your own driving comfort, but also the noise pollution of the environment. In the EU tire label, the external rolling noise is divided into 3 classes from A (lowest rolling noise) - C (highest rolling noise), measured in decibels (dB) and compared with the European noise emission limit values ​​for external tire rolling noise.

The tyres were used to drive from London to Lech in Austria in February when there was a lot of snow on the roads in the Alps. The Pilot Alpin 5 were on the front wheels of my car and 265/30 - 20 Pilot Alpin PA4 were on the rear axle. I would have preferred to have Pilot Alpin 5 on the rear axle but they are not available in this size.

The grip is excellent especially on wet surfaces. We change to summer tyres for even better grip in warmers weather so have not used them as summer tyres

I have been driving the Alpin 5 & 6 all year round (never change back to summers anymore). Michelins are safe and break very well in summer and winter despite what the manufacturers say, although I only have experience with Michelin Alpin winter tyres. In the UK it's never 35 degrees for any length of time hence the reason for keeping them on the car in the summer. Can't fault grip either in both winter and summer and in addition to this tyre wear is fantastic. 44000 miles on front tyres (Alpin 5 now replaced by Alpin 6), 66000 miles on rear tyres (Alpin 5). The tyres got through the MOT on an advisory, so next time round I would replace the tyres sooner.
